Ingegerd Råman
Ingegerd Råman, born in Stockholm in 1943, is one of Sweden’s most celebrated designers. She began her education under the guidance of Carl Malmsten at Capellagården in Öland, followed by studies at the University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design in Stockholm. Further honing her craft, she spent a year in Faenza, Italy, studying ceramic chemistry. In 1967, she established her first pottery studio at her home in Skåne, in southern Sweden.
While ceramics form the foundation of her early career, Råman has also enjoyed significant success as a glass designer. Her career in glass design began at Johansfors glassworks in 1968, and she later became the lead designer at Skruf glassworks in 1981. It was here that she designed the Bellman glass range, a collection that remains in production to this day. In the late 1990s, she joined Orrefors, where she spent 13 years as one of the company’s most influential designers.
Today, Råman works as a freelance designer, balancing her time between her studios in Skåne and on Skeppsholmen island in Stockholm. Her contributions to design have earned her numerous accolades, including the title of Professor by the Swedish government, the Prince Eugen Medal awarded by King Carl XVI Gustaf, and the Excellent Swedish Design award on several occasions. Her work has extended beyond ceramics and glass to architectural projects, such as collaborations with Gert Wingårdh on the Swedish Embassy in Washington and Aula Medica at the Karolinska Institute in Solna.
Ingegerd Råman continues to inspire as a respected figure in Swedish design, known for her minimalist approach and dedication to craftsmanship.
